The weather is warming up in Orange County and many homeowners are seeing an unusually high number of insects and rodents around their homes this year. Our recent long and wet winter is probably the main reason for this problem.

No one wants to live in a home infested with insects and rodents because these pests can do a great deal of damage to a home and its contents. They can also be serious vectors of disease. But, what are you supposed to do if you are concerned about using pesticides inside your home or business?

It may come as a surprise, but there are many ways in which you can control a lot of these pests without using pesticides. And, you’ll be happy to learn that there are a lot of things you can do yourself – at little or no costs to you. Here are ten tips to help keep your home pest free this summer:

1. Control excess moisture. This should always be your first step because water is like a magnet for insect and rodent problems. Check for plumbing leaks, roof leaks, leaky rain gutters, etc. Take a look at the ground around your home and make sure that you aren’t overwatering your lawn and plants. Check your sprinkler system and adjust it if needed. Insects and rodents need a lot of water so your home needs to stay as dry as possible.

2. Keep all plants and trees cut back away from your home. You should cut all trees back at least 4 feet away from your home and make sure that none of the tree branches are left hanging over your roof. This one simple step will discourage pests from entering your home and can be a real effective control measure.

3. Remove plants that attract insects and rodents because of their fruit. You may also want to remove other plants that harbor honey-dew producing insects (Fig trees, cherry laurel, bamboo, oleander, etc.).

4. Clean up leaf piles and debris from around your home. By doing this, you will eliminate a lot of pest harborage.

5. Keep firewood off the ground and store it away from your home. Be sure to check it for pests before bringing any firewood inside your home.

6. Seal up cracks and holes in your home’s exterior walls. This will eliminate harborage for many pests and help keep them out of your home. Weather stripping around doors will also help keep pests out.

7. Inspect the screens on your doors and windows and repair them if needed. Screens are a very effective way to keep pests out of your home. While you’re inspecting your home, don’t forget to check the screens on your attic, garage and subarea vents. These screens are especially important because they keep out birds, rodents and small animals.

8. Guard against pest invaders by checking incoming items for “hitchhiking” bugs. Many types of pests can be brought in with luggage, laundry and groceries. Take a close look before you bring any flowers or plants into your home because you’ll often find insects living in them.

9. Ensure good ventilation in attics, garages and subareas. An effective ventilation system will help keep these areas dry, will naturally reduce the amount of insects and will help to prevent mold and mildew problems.

10. Keep food and garbage in tightly fitting containers. This is especially important to do at night because that is when many pests are most active.

You’ll find that you can take these ten tips and solve a lot of pest problems without using any pesticides. However, from time to time, you may find that the application of a pesticide is still needed. If this is the case, you should select the least toxic product and follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do you have a pest problem that you need help with? Call us at (949) 631-7348 or use our online order form and we’ll be happy to schedule an appointment at your convenience.

On the battlefields of Belgium, during World War I, poppies grew wild on the ravaged landscape. The “poppy movement” was inspired by the poem, “In Flanders Fields”, written by a Canadian Army doctor named John McCrae. Some of the allied countries started selling replicas of the original Flanders poppy after the Armistice.

Moina Michael is credited as the founder of the Memorial Poppy in the United States. In November 1918, she was working at the YMCA Overseas War Secretaries Headquarters and was inspired by an article she read in a copy of Ladies Home Journal. The article carried a vivid color illustration for the poem, “We Shall Not Sleep” (later named, “In Flanders Fields”).

Moina was moved by the last verse where it said, “To you from failing hands we throw the Torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break the faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.” She made a personal pledge to always wear a red poppy of Flanders Fields as a sign of remembrance. She went on to work with the American Legion and in 1921, the Auxiliary set up the Memorial Day Poppy program.

Every year around Memorial Day, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Auxiliary distribute millions of bright red poppies in exchange for donations.

This program offers a number of benefits to veterans and the community.

It gives hospitalized veterans, who make the flowers, a way to earn a small wage. Also, the making of flowers can be therapeutic because of the physical and mental activity involved. All of the donations go directly to assist and support veterans and their families.

Would you like to get one of these poppies? The VFW will be passing them out at the Century 20 Theatres at the Bella Terra Mall on Memorial Day, 11am-5pm. This is a great cause and donations are gladly accepted.

Bees are wonderful creatures and have long been known to naturally produce medicinal compounds in their honey and venom. Recently, scientists have made an even more amazing discovery about bees, they may be able to help us cure HIV indefinitely.

Melittin is a toxin found in bee venom and scientists at the Washington University School of Medicine have found that it physically destroys the HIV virus. The study was published in a recent edition of the journal Antiviral Therapy.

During their research, they attached melittin to nanoparticles that are physically smaller than HIV, which issmaller than a body cell. The toxin ripped holes in the virus’ outer layer and destroyed it, while the surrounding body cells were left unharmed. This finding is an important first step toward the development of a vaginal gel that may prevent the spread of HIV.

“Our hope is that in places where HIV is running rampant, people could use this as a preventative measure to stop the initial infection,” says Joshua L. Hood MD, PhD, a research instructor in medicine.

Dr. Hood also sees the potential for using nanoparticles with melittin as therapy for existing HIV infections, especially those that are drug resistant. In theory, these particles could be injected intravenously and they would clear HIV from the blood stream.

“The basic particle that we are using in these experiments was developed many years ago as an artificial blood product,” Dr. Hood says. “It didn’t work very well for delivering oxygen, but it circulates safely in the body and gives us a nice platform that we can adapt to fight different kinds of infections.”

Their work was done in a laboratory environment but Dr. Hood and his colleagues say that the nanoparticles are easy to manufacture in large enough quantities to supply them for future clinical trials.

The study was supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Locusts have swept across Madagascar, destroyed crops and have caused millions of dollars in damage. Their government is now saying that they will need $41 million invested over the next three years to fight off the infestation and recover from this national disaster.

Locust are the “swarming phase” of certain species of short-horned grasshoppers. These swarming locust are powerful fliers that can travel great distances and will rapidly strip fields of all vegetation.

“Currently, about half the country is infested by hoppers and flying swarms – each swarm is made up of billions of plant-devouring insects,” the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization said in a statement.

This is the worst plague to hit the island since the 1950’s and that lasted for 17 years. They estimate that about two-thirds of Madagascar will be affected by the plague by this September if no action is taken.

More than $22 million in emergency funding will be needed by June so they can launch a full-scale aerial spraying campaign.

Madagascar is going to have to tackle this problem or they will have to face the possibility of devastating future consequences and expenses.

If you suffer from arachnophobia, your “worst nightmare” may have been discovered in the form of a venomous and quick moving tarantula the size of a dinner plate!

This arachnid can grow up to eight inches in diameter and was discovered in a Sri Lankan village. It has caused a panic among many villagers because they believe that its bite can be deadly. Residents are killing them on sight.

The stunning new spider is named “Poecilotheria rajaei”. They have eight legs, eight eyes, two fangs and are covered in beautiful ornate markings.

This spider is usually found living in trees. Anyone who has been hiking under trees has been startled by spiders, dangling from silken threads. But, can you imagine finding one of these “super spiders” hanging down from a tree, right in front of your face, that is the size of a volley ball? Oh my!!

Believe it or not, there are two known spiders that are larger than a “Poecilotheria rajaei”. The world’s largest spider is the “goliath bird-eater” and it measures out at a full 12 inches!

We don’t currently have any “super spiders” living in our country and let’s all hope that no one imports any of these. In Orange County, our two major venomous spiders are the Black Widow and the Brown Widow. They both measure up at only about 1 inch but can still be very scary when they land on you or one of your children.

Do you have a problem with spiders at your home or business? Please call us or use our online order form for a FREE 57 Point Pest Audit. With our pest audit, you’ll gain a lot of valuable information and you’ll learn how you can keep your home pest free.

The politicians in Washington DC are still playing politics and are doing nothing to improve our economy. That is why President Termite Terry is out on the campaign trail promoting his economic stimulus plan. His plan has shown proven results and many have enjoyed getting their own FREE tank of gas. Here are just a few more that have benefited:

David & Michelle Donovan of Stanton referred us to their neighbor, Gypsy Wells of Stanton.

Mimi Vuu of Westminster referred our services to her cousin, Van Nguyen of Anaheim.

Kay Bogeajis of Costa Mesa referred us to Bob Lachner of Costa Mesa.

Steve Abdo of Laguna Hills referred our services to Joseph Elkhoury of Mission Viejo.

Joseph Elkhoury, who we just mentioned, couldn’t wait to get in on the action. So, he referred us to his neighbor, Tom Dun of Mission Viejo.

Fushio Nakawaki of Placentia recommended our service to his brother, Ted Nakawaki of Yorba Linda.

Can you imagine how all these people feel when they fill up their gas tank for FREE? To participate, all you have to do is to refer us to your family, friends or neighbors. And, if they have us do termite treatments, wood repairs or start a regular pest control service, you’ll get your FREE tank of gas, too!

“We are writing this letter in response to our experience with Termite Terry Pest Control, and Skip Haffke.

From the first contact through post fumigation, we were extremely pleased and impressed at the level of service we received. Our quote was sent in September 2012, we did not fumigate until March 2013, and the price quoted remained the same.

Skip was very thorough from the first meeting with his knowledge and information of termites and the fumigation process.

We felt safe and secure leaving our home in their hands after a thorough explanation and hands on prep session. We believe they took a few extra measures in making our home secure while we were away.

Upon return we felt as if nothing had occurred at all. Everything was put back into its place, and the yard areas were cleaned up of debris.

We feel very confident in recommending Termite Terry Pest Control and their staff.”

Lane and Kelly Keran
Rancho Santa Margarita

“Just wanted to take a moment and thank you for a job well done. Our 20 year old wood patio had termites as well as wood rot and our homeowners association required that we make the repairs.

After your inspection, we decided to go ahead and tear down the old patio and put up a new one. Your crew was right on schedule and had the job done in 1 1/2 days. They were very neat and precise in their work, and left things well cleaned up. Patio looks awesome and I feel my monies were well invested.

Feel free to use me as a reference because I am satisfied customer.”

Termite Terry says, “You’ve heard us say how important it is to find out if your fumigator is giving you’re a full tank of gas before you hire them. Take a look at this letter from one of our clients and you’ll learn that it is more important than ever to verify your home’s measurements before you decide on hiring anyone!”

“I noticed termite pellets on exterior wood patio covers and inside my garage. I already did some online research and knew that I wanted to fumigate and not just spot treat. Contacted Termite Terry and an inspection was performed by Skip. Skip was very thorough in explaining the entire process and what we needed to do to prepare for the fumigation. Skip also showed-up a couple days before the fumigation and provided the special bags needed for the food and medicine; he also reviewed the process. The tent crews arrived promptly the day of fumigation and immediately got busy putting up the tent. The crew leader was helpful, informative and didn’t mind me sticking around to watch and ask questions. By the time they were done, the two-story home looked like it was shrink-wrapped; they did a great job with the tent and seals . 48-hours later the tent was removed and our home cleared for occupancy.

We contacted three termite companies and all came out to do an inspection and provide a price. All were ‘A’ rated companies and professional. However, the price differences were more than I expected, and I came to realize it had to do with the volume of my house (which is used to determine the amount of Vikane gas used) that each company measured. I ended-up measuring the volume of my home myself, based on how the tent would hang over the house (balconies, patio covers, etc.) since this is the volume that the gas would occupy, and I came the closest to Skip’s calculation; which was no surprise since Skip physically measured my home with a wheel and rod. So I went with Termite Terry; the bonus is that of the three companies they were the only one that had a money back guarantee in addition to re-fumigating.

All companies require that the owner sign a waiver of damage to roof tiles, plants, etc. They did break a roof tile, and had to disassemble a portion of a fence to fit the tent, but the possibilities of these things were pointed out by Skip before the work started.”

Thank You,
