“Poop” In Your Sushi Rice?

California is the sushi capital of the world and diners here are now learning that there may be “poop” in their sushi rice.

sushi_roll_by_cfergiee-d4uf7sk    A class-action has been filed claiming that rice in California may have been tainted with black mold, rodent droppings and other undesirable substances. The lawsuit claims that “defendants store and maintain rice in such a fashion as to allow foreign substances such as insects, rodents and their soiling, bird remains, and black mold to be present in its processed rice.”

Restaurants and stores say in the complaint that they purchased what was claimed to be sushi-grade rice, however, the attorney representing the case says what they actually purchased may have contained only as much as 15 percent sushi-grade rice. The attorney went on to say, “Every single person who has been to a sushi restaurant in the last few years probably has had contact with this kind of rice.”

“The rice is adulterated with what’s called flush in this industry,” said the attorney. “And flush in the industry is anything that is not supposed to be in the rice.”

“Disposing flush rice by blending it with food-grade rice unfairly allowed defendants to obtain a profit from rice that could not be legally sold for human consumption,” the complaint states.

The Farmer’s Rice Cooperative rejected the accusations, saying: “We believe the charges are baseless and look forward to the opportunity to vindicate ourselves in court.”

Personally, I like eating sushi and none of us really knows if what this case claims is true. In the meantime, I think I’ll order some fish and a salad the next time I go out to one of these restaurants.
