Celebrating National Ice Cream Month

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. Almost everyone enjoys eating ice cream during our hot summers, so let’s look at some fun facts about this delicious food:

  • In 1904, a Syrian waffle maker at the Louis World’s Fair began rolling his waffles into horns to help an ice cream vendor who had run out of dishes. That is how the ice cream cone became popular.
  • The average American eats about 20 quarts of ice cream per year.
  • Vanilla is the top selling flavor with 33 percent of the market. Chocolate is the second most popular flavor, at 19%.
  • 8 pounds of whole milk and one pound of cream are used to make one gallon of ice cream.
  • The record for the largest ice cream cone ever made is 9 foot and 2.63 inches in height!
  • June is the busiest month for ice cream production.
  • California is the largest producer of ice cream in America.
  • At any given time, 87 percent of Americans have ice cream in their freezer.
